Thirroul House
Set below the stunning Illawarra Escarpment came the need for our clients to downsize from their original dwelling and create a dual occupancy dwelling within their existing site. Site sensitivity and views and aspects towards the escarpment and ocean were of utmost importance and both the pulls of these magnificent environments had to be accounted for and experienced throughout the design. The design begins as a subterranean entrance through the existing ground at street level leads up to a pavilion style design. A softness and lightness was created with Barestone feature cement cladding and timber engulfed within a gorgeous garden, whilst the house sits beneath the foothills of the escarpment. The architectural language only gets lighter as you ascend to the living areas on the first floor and take in both the ocean and escarpment while bathed in light and greenery and softness of the birch ply joinery throughout.
This home is celebration of life between the mountain and the sea and the architectural language that ties this all together.
